SITE ANALYSIS &
DESIGN RESPONSE

JALAN PETALING, KUALA LUMPUR
The Preliminary Studies project introduces students to the fundamentals of urban design through a Townscape Assessment. This foundational task examines a town or city's character, identity, and uniqueness to uncover opportunities for responsive urban design and place-making. The Townscape Appraisal evaluates the visual and aesthetic qualities of an urban area, focusing on its character, distinctiveness, strengths, weaknesses, and potential for improvement. The process incorporates nine key indicators: historical and urban morphology, urban structure, responsive environment, physical evaluation, place, context, landscape character, behavioral survey, and a S.W.O.T. analysis (Micro). This exercise combines macro and micro-scale site analysis, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the site as a foundation for the semester's work.

REFLECTION

Working on this project was a valuable learning experience as it allowed me to explore a new design aspect. Previously, my focus had always been on-site measurements, but this time I delved into understanding the sense of place. Shifting my perspective to analyze the character and identity of the site was both challenging and rewarding. It broadened my skills and deepened my appreciation for the nuances of urban design. This new approach taught me how to look beyond technical data and embrace the emotional and cultural elements of a space, making me a more versatile and thoughtful designer.
